300 Pupils, 2 Trained Teachers: Afofiekrom D/A Primary Cries Out for Government Help

The Circuit Supervisor for the Benchema Circuit in the Juaboso District, Simon Amo Amua, has made an urgent appeal to the government to post trained teachers to Afofiekrom D/A Primary School to save the institution from a growing educational crisis.

Speaking during the school’s children’s graduation ceremony yesterday on the school premises, Mr. Amua revealed that despite a growing student population of around 300 pupils, the school currently relies on only two professional, government-trained teachers. To bridge this critical gap, the local community has had to hire non-professional staff on their own. However, Mr. Amua emphasized that this temporary arrangement is failing to enhance teaching and learning standards for the children.

The appeal comes at a crucial time as the school expands to launch its Junior High School track in the upcoming academic year. Mr. Amua urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to step in swiftly and post qualified teachers so that the new JHS can deliver lucrative and quality education.

Beyond the severe staffing shortage, Mr. Amua highlighted critical infrastructure challenges holding the school back. In the 21st century, Afofiekrom still lacks access to electricity, which not only hinders modern learning but also disables basic amenities. Although non-governmental organizations recently constructed a modern toilet facility for the school, pupils are completely unable to use it because the flush system requires water that cannot be pumped without power.

As a result, students are forced to rely on an old, dilapidated wooden latrine that Mr. Amua described as a dangerous death trap. He concluded by pleading with government authorities to intervene urgently, ensuring the school receives the staff, electricity, and basic safety measures needed for its students to thrive.
