Veteran Nollywood Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57 After Brief Illness
Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a short illness, his family has announced.
The family confirmed his death in a statement published on the actor’s official Instagram account in the early hours of Friday, expressing appreciation to fans and well-wishers for their prayers, affection and support during the difficult period.
In the statement, the family expressed sadness over his passing and appealed for understanding as they mourned their loss.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement said.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children.
The late actor was one of the recognisable figures in Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, where he earned widespread attention for his role as Ahanna in *Rattlesnake*, a 1995 movie produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
His performance in the film helped establish his place among familiar faces in Nigerian cinema.
Duru’s death comes months after he dismissed reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening medical condition.
In June, the actor responded to a video circulating on social media about his health. In a video shared on his Instagram page, he rejected the claims as untrue and criticised those responsible for spreading the reports.
