MP for Atwima Nwabiagya South supports 300 SHS students with Prospectus items
Hon. Shirley Kyei, the Member of Parliament for the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has supported 300 graduates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) by providing them with Senior High School (SHS) prospectus items.
The initiative supports brilliant but financially disadvantaged students, easing the burden on parents who struggle to afford the necessary items before schools reopen on 18th September, 2026.
The distributed relief packages included essential supplies such as trunks, chop boxes, student mattresses, and exercise books.
She noted that due to the constraints of some parents, she decided to bear some of the cost of the school essentials in order to enable brilliant but needy students to access the SHS. She also added that she has helped provide 50 scholarships to some students at the tertiary level.
She also advised the BECE graduates to abstain from social vices such as drugs and make their books their priority as well.
Meanwhile, Municipal Education Director for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Nana Ama Pokua, has highlighted severe infrastructural deficits and a lack of furniture as critical challenges hampering education delivery in the municipality.
Speaking on pressing issues in the sector, she emphasized the urgent need for teachers’ bungalows to accommodate educators, noting that long commuting distances place an undue physical burden and stress on teachers.
Nana Ama Pokua also raised concerns about rising student absenteeism, linking it largely to the influx of “Pragya” (tricycle) commercial transport, which has distracted many students and drawn them into premature income-generating activities.
Despite these hurdles, she commended the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Shirley, praising her immense contributions toward driving educational growth in the municipality and restoring hope and joy to many lives.
“For a country to develop, education cannot be left behind,” Nana Ama Pokua stressed.
Echoing these sentiments, Nana Owusu Baffour Afriyie, the Otumfuo Abrafohene and Chief of Abuakwa Maakro, expressed deep appreciation to the MP for her outstanding support. He lauded her impactful initiatives, which include comprehensive scholarship packages and the wide-scale distribution of learning materials for students ranging from Junior High School (JHS) to Senior High School (SHS).
