Wontumi Allegedly Targeted in Prison Poisoning Attempt, Aide Claims
A senior aide to former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some inmates attempted to poison the politician while he was in prison.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah said Mr Antwi-Boasiako informed him about the alleged incident when he appeared in court on Tuesday, October 27, adding that prison authorities had initiated investigations into the claim.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM as Chairman Wontumi marked 100 days in prison, Dr Boakye-Danquah said the politician was doing well, although he had received information about the alleged poisoning attempt.
“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.
He explained that the information had not yet been confirmed and that investigations were ongoing to determine whether the alleged incident actually occurred.
“And so I’ve been informed that there are some investigations that are ongoing to make sure that they verify the truth or otherwise of that,” he added.
Dr Boakye-Danquah further disclosed that he had spoken with the prison commander about the matter. According to him, the commander confirmed that steps had been taken to investigate the allegation and promised to provide feedback.
He said the alleged attempt occurred a few days before Chairman Wontumi raised the issue during his court appearance.
“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” Dr Boakye-Danquah stated.
Despite the claim, the aide emphasised that he had not received any medical report indicating that Chairman Wontumi had suffered harm from the alleged incident.
The details surrounding the reported poisoning attempt remain uncertain, and the allegation has not been independently verified as investigations continue.
