One Immigration Officer Dead, Colleague Critically Injured in Hamile Explosion
An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has reportedly died, while another has sustained critical injuries following an explosion involving a motor tricycle allegedly transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident happened on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route within the border community, sparking concerns over the transportation of potentially explosive materials through unofficial entry points.
According to a report by Accra-based Citi News, security sources in Hamile indicated that the civilians riding the tricycle also died in the explosion.
The occupants were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly failing to obey an order to stop at a checkpoint.
Preliminary information suggests that the tricycle was using an unauthorised route when security officers attempted to intercept it. The occupants allegedly refused to stop, prompting a chase that eventually ended in the deadly blast.
The explosion reportedly affected the officers pursuing the tricycle, resulting in the death of one Immigration Service personnel and leaving another in critical condition.
The injured officer is said to be in a serious state, although further information about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where treatment is being provided has not yet been made available.
Hamile is a border settlement in the Upper West Region, situated close to Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso.
Security personnel in the area regularly undertake patrols and monitoring operations to prevent unauthorised movements and respond to possible threats along the country’s borders.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the dangers security officers face while enforcing border controls, particularly when dealing with the movement of suspected explosive materials through unapproved routes.
