Mahama Visits Ghanaian Kente Exhibition at Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow
President John Dramani Mahama has toured a Kente Exhibition organised by the Russia-Ghana Parliamentary Forum in Moscow as part of activities marking the Third Russia-Africa Summit.
The exhibition, held in partnership with the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) and the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, aims to promote Ghana’s cultural identity by presenting kente, one of the country’s most celebrated traditional fabrics, to an international audience.
During the visit on Thursday, President Mahama expressed gratitude to members of the Russian Parliamentary Group for strengthening their friendship and cooperation with Ghana.
He emphasised that although relations between governments were important, lasting partnerships depended largely on closer connections between the people of both countries.
“While we have contacts from government to government, and we have relations between our two governments, the more enduring partnerships are the relations between people and people,” he said.
The President added that greater knowledge and appreciation of one another’s cultures were essential to building stronger people-to-people relationships.
“People-to-people relationships, and the only way we can consolidate people-to-people relationships is to understand each other’s cultures,” he stated.
President Mahama also praised GEPA and its partners for successfully bringing the exhibition to Moscow, describing the initiative as an important opportunity to introduce Ghana’s cultural heritage to the Russian public.
He disclosed that nearly 11,000 people had already visited the exhibition, expressing satisfaction with its organisation and presentation.
The President further noted that the exhibition materials and descriptions had been translated into Russian, allowing visitors to better understand the meaning of the displays, including the Adinkra symbols and other cultural exhibits.
“I understand; almost 11,000 people have so far come to see this exhibition, and it is well laid out, and all the explanations have been translated into Russian, and so you can understand the Adinkra symbols and all the exhibits that are here,” President Mahama said.
