Mahama Secures £215 Million UK Deals, Launches Growth Partnership at Downing Street Meeting

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major economic breakthrough with the United Kingdom, unveiling deals worth up to £215 million following a breakfast meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Number 10 Downing Street.

The Tuesday morning talks, part of President Mahama’s five-day official UK visit, focused on strengthening bilateral ties, deepening economic cooperation, and expanding trade and investment opportunities.

Ahead of the Downing Street meeting, Ghana and the UK signed the landmark UK-Ghana Growth Partnership-a roadmap for 2026–2028 aimed at delivering tangible benefits for Ghanaians and businesses operating in the country.

President Mahama revealed that the partnership prioritises private-sector growth, infrastructure, and youth skills development to prepare young Ghanaians for global competition.

“A groundbreaking £101 million UK-backed initiative will create the Gulf of Guinea’s very first commercial-scale ship repair and dry-docking facility,” the President said. “Set to generate up to 430 direct jobs, including 30 per cent reserved for women, the Takoradi Floating Dock Project will propel Ghana to the forefront of regional maritime hubs.”

On climate and environment, the President noted the partnership is unlocking millions in climate-aligned infrastructure, including an £85 million reforestation fund and a £9 million investment dedicated to forest restoration in the Oti Region. “These transformative projects will generate local jobs and safeguard our environment,” he added.

In technology and health, a £6 million partnership will support the implementation of the Ghana AI Strategy and boost science collaboration across universities, while a £4 million partnership will transform health systems through specialist clinical engineering training.

President Mahama also announced that new transnational education guidelines would be launched, opening outstanding opportunities for Ghanaian students to access world-class training.

He was accompanied by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Trade, Industry and Agribusiness Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson.
