Kumasi Mayor, Kejetia Traders Embark on Clean-Up Ahead of Asantehemaa’s Burial

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has joined petty traders at the Kejetia market in a massive clean-up exercise along the Dr. Mensah–Manhyia Palace stretch.

Speaking during the exercise, the Mayor explained that the initiative was to prepare the city and welcome visitors who will be in Kumasi to mourn and bid farewell to the late Asantehemaa during her burial rites. He commended the traders for honouring his invitation and urged them to turn up in greater numbers for another major clean-up scheduled for Saturday, September 13, ahead of the funeral starting on September 14.

The spokesperson of the traders’ association noted that the exercise formed part of their social responsibility to keep Asanteman clean. He added that since all businesses in the region operate under the care of the Asantehemaa, the association could not remain passive during such an important occasion.

“Today is Sunday, and although many of us should have been in church, we have set time aside to support this clean-up. It is our way of showing respect,” he said.

He further encouraged fellow traders to maintain cleanliness at their workplaces daily, not only during major events. “After your daily sales, clean your space. Don’t wait for a big occasion before you act,” he advised.

The Mayor also stressed the need for collective effort in restoring Kumasi’s image as the “Garden City,” calling on residents to keep their surroundings neat and fresh at all times.
