Asantehene Destools 89-Year Paramount Chief

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, the Kenyase II Manhene and Asanteman’s longest-serving Paramount Chief.

The announcement was made at an Asanteman Traditional Council meeting on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Enstooled in 1937, Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio had ruled for an extraordinary 89 years-one of the longest reigns in the history of the Asante Kingdom. His tenure spanned generations and major periods of social and cultural change.

The Traditional Council linked the destoolment to breaches of Asante customs and traditions. Nearly all his kingmakers were also removed for violating their oath of office.

The Asantehene, however, spared the Kontihene and reinstated the previously destooled Akyeame and other linguists of the traditional council.

The decision underscores Otumfuo’s role as the supreme custodian of Asante customs and his commitment to upholding accountability within the traditional system.
