Greater Accra Minister Calls for Balance in ‘Akwaaba’ vs ‘Oobakɛ’ Debate

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has addressed the ongoing debate over the proposal to replace the popular welcoming phrase “Akwaaba” with “Oobakɛ” at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

In her remarks, Madam Ocloo stressed the importance of safeguarding Ga culture and language, pointing out that the Ga people, as traditional custodians of Accra, have every right to advocate for their cultural preservation.

She, however, emphasized that Ghana’s identity is rooted in “unity in diversity” and cautioned against decisions that could foster ethnic division.

“Cultural and heritage matters must be approached with sensitivity, broad consultation, and the national interest at heart,” she said.

The Minister assured that government would engage stakeholders to find a middle ground that celebrates Ga-Dangme heritage while strengthening national unity.

“The preservation of Ga culture is not in conflict with national cohesion but forms a vital part of our shared identity,” Madam Ocloo affirmed.
