Bono NPP Chairman Abronye DC Granted GH¢50,000 Bail

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been released on bail of GH¢50,000 by an Accra Circuit Court, with one surety required but no justification needed. His lead counsel, Daniel Mantey Addo, revealed that Abronye’s health has worsened during his detention, and the bail decision has offered much-needed relief to the legal team and family. The defense is now rushing to fulfill the conditions to facilitate his prompt discharge from custody.

Abronye DC’s arrest stemmed from an incident on September 8, 2025, when police took him into custody over charges of “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.” Authorities cited his recent public statements, which included accusations against the Inspector General of Police and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), as potentially inciting unrest. The case, which has ignited debates on political motivations and free speech, is adjourned until September 19, 2025.

The NPP has decried the detention as an abuse of state power against opposition figures, with party elders calling for intervention from the National Peace Council. Abronye’s legal battles, including prior bail denials on September 9 and 12, have drawn support from prominent party members like Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Freddie Blay, highlighting tensions ahead of the 2026 elections.
