“Broad Daylight Thievery”: Metro Mass Transit Boss Slams Government Over Alleged Opera Square Land Grab

The Management of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited has launched a scathing attack on the government, alleging a “create, loot, and share” scheme involving the sale of portions of the iconic Opera Square Bus Terminal in Accra to a private developer.

In a bold confrontation captured on-site, Haroun Apaw-Wiredu, the Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit, did not mince words, labeling the transaction as an act of “brazen corruption” and “broad daylight thievery.”

Key Allegations of State Capture

According to the MMT leadership, the deal is a calculated attempt to capture state property for personal economic gain. Apaw-Wiredu expressed outrage at the speed and audacity with which the terminal-a vital hub for public transportation-is being partitioned and handed over to private interests.

• Unauthorized Construction: A private developer has already moved onto the site and is currently constructing shops.

• Traders Under Threat: There are ongoing attempts to evict existing traders to pave the way for further private development across other sections of the terminal.

• Lack of Transparency: Management maintains that the transfer of these lands did not follow due process and undermines the operational capacity of the state-owned transport company.

“We Will Not Stand By”

The MMT management has vowed to resist the encroachment. Apaw-Wiredu pledged that the company would utilize all legitimate and legal avenues to halt the development and protect the terminal from further “unauthorized” activity.
