FDA Seizes Contaminated Smoked Fish After Viral Video Exposes Dirty Processing

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated smoked and salted (dried) fish processed under unhygienic conditions following a viral video that sparked public concern over unsafe handling practices.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 28, the Authority said it quickly sent a rapid response team to the site on Monday, July 27, working with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service.

Officials immediately seized the fish exposed to the unsanitary conditions and educated the processors on the health risks of poor hygiene.

The FDA noted that similar cases have occurred from time to time and said it has continued to partner with other agencies to protect the public through education and enforcement.

It also announced plans to step up engagement with fish processors and fishmongers in the affected coastal districts to promote better hygiene and higher food safety standards.

The Authority advised consumers to buy smoked and dried fish only from clean, reputable sources, inspect products carefully before purchase, and reject any with bad odours, strange colour, visible contamination or signs of spoilage.

Shoppers were further urged to wash the fish thoroughly before cooking and ensure it is properly cooked before eating.

The FDA called on the public to report any suspected unhygienic food processing, storage or sale to the nearest FDA office or local assembly.

It assured Ghanaians that, together with its partner agencies, it will keep removing unsafe fish and fish products from the market while intensifying public education and enforcement to protect public health.
