Ghana Repatriates 327 Citizens Stranded by Demolition in Côte d’Ivoire

The Government of Ghana has begun repatriating 327 Ghanaian migrants left homeless and stranded following a mass demolition exercise in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

According to a press release issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 228 of the affected nationals have already returned home as of Thursday, June 11. The remaining citizens are expected to arrive today, June 12, completing the full repatriation.

The Ghanaians had been residing in areas targeted by the demolition, which destroyed their homes and sources of livelihood, leaving them unable to afford alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Ghanaian government has provided buses and trucks free of charge to transport the returnees and their belongings safely back to the country.

In a gesture acknowledged by the Ministry, Ivorian authorities have expressed a desire to compensate victims of the demolition exercise. Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will remain actively engaged to ensure that the promised compensation reaches the affected nationals.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians and will intensify efforts to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful return and reintegration of the affected individuals,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry also expressed appreciation to Côte d’Ivoire’s authorities and all stakeholders for their cooperation. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.
