Weija Dam Spillage Causes Flooding in Tetegu, Sampah Valley and Other Communities

Residents of Tetegu, Sampah Valley, Choice and several downstream communities within the Weija enclave have been severely affected by flooding following the opening of the spill gates of the Weija Dam by Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

The flooding has submerged homes, roads, and low-lying areas after excess water was released from the dam as part of measures to protect the facility from possible structural damage.

Several residents were seen rushing to salvage household items and relocate their belongings to safer places as water levels continued to rise across affected communities.

The development follows an earlier announcement by Ghana Water Limited indicating that water levels at the dam had exceeded the maximum operating level of 48 feet, making the controlled spilling of excess water necessary.

In a statement, the company explained that all spill gates of the dam had been opened to reduce pressure on the facility and maintain its structural safety.

“The water level in the dam has currently risen above the maximum operating level of 48 feet. Consequently, all spill gates of the dam are being opened to allow for the controlled spillage of excess water in order to safeguard the structural integrity and safety of the dam,” the statement noted.

According to GWL, the controlled spilling exercise is a routine measure carried out during the rainy season whenever water levels rise above 45 feet in order to prevent excessive pressure on the dam and avert potential disasters.

The company further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast more torrential rains upstream, which is expected to increase water inflows into the dam.

As a result, the spilling exercise is expected to continue until the water level drops to a safe operating point.

“This process may continue for some months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes,” the statement added.

Ghana Water Limited has therefore advised residents living in downstream and flood-prone communities to immediately evacuate vulnerable areas to protect lives and property.

The company also revealed that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with various district assemblies, has begun efforts to remove structures and other obstructions preventing the smooth flow of water into the sea.

GWL appealed to the relevant authorities to speed up those interventions in order to minimise flooding risks in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, affected residents have appealed for urgent assistance, including temporary shelter, relief items, and improved drainage systems, expressing fears that continued rainfall could worsen the flooding situation in the coming days.

Ghana Water Limited assured the public of its commitment to protecting the dam infrastructure while prioritising the safety of residents and urged communities to cooperate fully with emergency directives issued by state agencies.
