TIDAL WAVE DESTROYS 13 HOUSES, DISPLACES OVER 80 RESIDENTS AT MOREE

A powerful tidal wave has destroyed 13 houses in Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District, leaving more than 80 residents homeless.

The National Disaster Management Organisation confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday following strong tidal activity along the coast.

In a statement, the Central Regional Directorate of NADMO disclosed that although there were no casualties, the tidal surge caused extensive destruction to homes, properties, and livelihoods within the community.

According to the statement, emergency officials received distress reports about collapsed buildings and immediately deployed response teams to the area.

Personnel from NADMO, Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the District Assembly reportedly responded swiftly to help protect lives and property.

The responding teams later conducted rapid assessments and arranged temporary shelter for residents displaced by the disaster.

NADMO further warned that the sea remains rough and urged residents to remain calm while authorities continue efforts to ensure their safety.

The organisation also expressed sympathy to affected families and assured the public that measures are being put in place to support victims of the incident.

The latest disaster has once again highlighted the recurring threat of tidal waves and coastal erosion affecting several communities in the Central Region.

Local authorities and disaster management officials have therefore renewed calls for long-term solutions, including the construction of coastal protection infrastructure and intensified public education to reduce future risks.
