Most Reverend Bishop John Afoakwah Urges Small-Scale Miners to Cease Destructive Practices

In an exclusive interview with Antwi Bosiako of Queens FM at Manso Keniago St. Peter Parish Church, Most Reverend John Afoakwah, the Catholic Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese, has called on small-scale miners and illegal miners (galamseyers) to stop activities that are damaging water bodies. He emphasized that such actions are detrimental to the country’s welfare.

“What is the benefit of extracting gold from water bodies if, in the end, there is no potable water to drink? Such actions will lead to severe consequences, including early death,” the Bishop stated.

He urged the government to implement stringent measures for miners to follow, ensuring that mining activities do not harm the environment. Bishop Afoakwah also advised land miners to cover pits after their operations to reclaim the land for future use and reduce accidents, such as drowning incidents in uncovered pits.

Additionally, Bishop Afoakwah highlighted the poor state of road networks in the Amansie South district, noting that even the few roads available do not last long. He appealed to the government to address the issue urgently.

The Bishop also advised residents to wear nose masks due to the excessive dust in the area, which poses health risks. “Protect yourselves from harmful illnesses caused by dust,” he urged.
