The Chief Justice talks of the Vigorous Pursuit of the Judiciary to tackle Land Disputes

 The 15th Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, has emphasized the commitment of the judiciary to digitally transform the country’s legal landscape in order to tackle land disputes more effectively. She highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to improve access to justice, and its efficiency for all Ghanaians. This will ultimately end the widespread issue of land litigation across Ghana. The initiative aims to curb the problem of land guards, which has resulted in violent and even a time in deadly conflicts over land ownership.

A committee of experts, comprising judges and surveyors, has been formed to develop strategies to combat this issue. This will be achieved by exploring various ways to ease the pressure in land litigation; this initiative will be a major move to address the issue.

The 3rd female to hold the position Chief Justice position explained that the chosen approach is ensure that the efforts being made are a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders.She futher explained that the approach was chosen to allow experts to present their insights directly since the leaders involved in the initiative are strong and capable in their own right.

She also assured Ghanaians that, very soon, they will no longer experience trauma when seeking justice in court. That when someone has a problem, they would find it easy to approach the court and get justice. “That is what access to justice means: the ability to easily come to court and get justice.”, she said, while addressing the judicial press corps at the court complex.
