Work from Home – Interior Minister Advises Accra Residents Amid Severe Flooding

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged residents of Accra to work from home on Monday following severe overnight rainfall that has triggered widespread flooding and brought parts of the capital to a standstill.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Minister said that based on information from the Meteorological Department, more heavy rains are expected, particularly as weather systems from Togo approach. He warned that conditions could worsen.

“Based on what the Meteorological Department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please stay home, work from home,” he advised.

The Minister advised workers already at their workplaces to remain there until conditions improve, while those yet to leave home should stay indoors and work remotely where possible.

He further called on employers across the country to activate flexible work arrangements, stressing the need to maintain operations through remote systems during the disruption.

“Private and public meetings that are not too urgent, we can have them on Zoom, and those that are very urgent, we can postpone them,” he added.

The appeal comes as emergency services continue to battle flooded roads and severe traffic gridlock across the capital, with authorities working to minimise risk and safeguard lives.

The Minister also expressed appreciation to emergency responders, including NADMO, the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Ghana Police Service, for their ongoing efforts. He urged improved coordination among agencies, encouraging swift information sharing to enhance response efforts.

“I want to thank NADMO, the Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police and all the emergency teams for the work they have already started doing… let us work together and operate as one unit,” he said.
