Cooking Incident Suspected to Have Triggered Kofikrom Fire at North Kaneshie

An eyewitness has recounted how a cooking incident may have sparked the major fire that continues to burn at Kofikrom in the North Kaneshie Industrial Area.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the witness said someone was reportedly cooking in the area when a sudden explosion occurred, shortly before the fire broke out.

It remains unclear whether the food had been left unattended at the time of the incident.

The eyewitness said residents initially tried to contain the fire by fetching water from a nearby company.

However, their efforts were reportedly stopped by officials of the company, who, according to the witness, told them they “don’t care.”

Fire Service personnel later arrived at the scene to respond to the emergency, but they reportedly faced difficulties accessing the area.

The witness said several cargo trucks had blocked the road leading to the scene, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through.

According to him, the drivers of the trucks were also unwilling to move their vehicles to create space for the Fire Service personnel.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power supply to the area as part of measures following the fire outbreak.

The eyewitness also attributed the intensity of the blaze to the large quantities of plastic materials being sold around the area.

He said the presence of the plastics contributed to the rapid spread and intensity of the fire.
