CAGD Pays Promotion Arrears to 56,003 GES Teachers Ahead of October 16 Deadline

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), meeting the government-agreed deadline of October 16, 2026, ahead of schedule.

In a press release issued on October 15, the department disclosed that 49,725 teachers received their payments on Thursday alongside their October salaries, while 6,278 others were paid in September.

The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears owed to the affected teachers from January 1, 2026.

The development follows an agreement reached between government representatives and teacher unions during a meeting at the Ministry of Education on October 2, when October 16 was set as the deadline for clearing the outstanding payments.

Despite the payments, thousands of promoted teachers are yet to receive their entitlements because their cases have not been processed or require additional documentation.

The CAGD explained that the GES had reported a total of 80,000 promoted teachers. Of this number, the Service processed and submitted the necessary supporting documents for 56,633 cases.

Following its verification exercise, the CAGD approved and paid 56,003 cases, leaving 630 outstanding due to issues detected during the verification process.

The department said it was awaiting the GES to address the identified discrepancies before payments could be made to the affected teachers.

Additionally, 23,367 promoted teachers are yet to have their cases processed, as the GES is yet to submit the required documentation for them.

The CAGD stated that it had settled all cases for teachers whose submitted records satisfied the necessary payroll requirements. It added that payments for the remaining eligible teachers would be made once the identified issues were corrected or complete and accurate documentation was submitted and verified.

The department also expressed appreciation to the Ghana Education Service, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation in facilitating the payment process.
