TEWU Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Unaddressed Grievances in Education

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has launched an indefinite nationwide strike starting today, Friday, September 19, 2025, accusing the government of neglecting the concerns of non-teaching staff in the education sector. In a statement signed by General Secretary King James Azortibah, TEWU instructed its members, including staff from the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, to stay home until further notice.

The union cited the government’s failure to address longstanding issues, despite TEWU following all legal and procedural requirements. Their demands include signing Conditions of Service, including non-teaching GES staff in the September Continuous Professional Development Allowance, resolving promotion disputes, and finalizing agreements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. “We have shown patience and followed due process, but the government’s inaction has forced this strike,” the statement read, holding the government responsible for disrupting industrial peace.

The strike is expected to halt administrative, security, library, and support services across educational and cultural institutions nationwide. TEWU warned against any intimidation of its members, labeling such actions as unfair labor practices. The union has notified the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, GES, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the National Labour Commission, urging employers to respect the lawful decision of non-teaching staff.
