Otumfou Brempong Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II Resolves Long-Standing Chieftaincy Dispute in Manso Essienkyem

Otumfou Brempong Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II, the Dome-Keniago Chief, has successfully mediated and settled a decades-old chieftaincy dispute over the Essienkyem stool, restoring it to the rightful family after years of contention.

According to the Abusuapanin, the conflict began when their grandfather, Nana Yaw Mensah, in his old age, appointed Nana Sarfo Adu as caretaker of the stool with instructions to manage it and report back. However, Nana Sarfo Adu allegedly refused to relinquish control even after the grandchildren came of age. “Whenever family elders visited to discuss the matter, they were denied access to him,” the Abusuapanin recounted. Despite repeated efforts following their grandfather’s passing, Nana Sarfo Adu declined to return the stool.

Frustrated, the family escalated the issue to Otumfou Brempong Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II, who facilitated a resolution through traditional oath-swearing. “Only an oath could protect or reclaim something so precious,” the Abusuapanin explained, noting that the process ensured the stool was returned to its rightful heirs.

Family member Mr. Alex Marfo expressed profound gratitude to Otumfou Brempong for resolving the dispute that had persisted since 1990. “We are thankful to Nana for helping us reclaim our throne,” he said.

Following the chief’s directive, the family has committed to selecting a successor with zeal, determination, and enthusiasm to lead Essienkyem. “We will install someone who will make the stool a shining example for others to follow,” Mr. Marfo added.

The peaceful resolution has been hailed as a victory for tradition and unity in the community.
