Kumasi: Thousands of Sobolo artisans risk evacuation

A longstanding land dispute near Sobolo, close to the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, has escalated into chaos as police officers and security personnel reportedly stormed the area early this morning with an excavator, destroying properties and detaining at least 10 individuals.

The land, currently occupied by a group of mechanics and artisans, has been at the center of a legal battle between the workers and a woman identified as Reverend Agnes Boateng, who claims rightful ownership.

According to her, the land was sold to her by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and she obtained a favorable ruling at the Kumasi High Court. The case is currently under appeal and is scheduled for hearing in October 2025.

Despite the pending appeal, workers were shocked to witness a forceful eviction operation this morning. Several eyewitnesses alleged that the security personnels assaulted some of the occupants and forcibly sacked them from the land.

One woman, who has been working on the land for over 30 years, said the destruction has left her and her family devastated.
“This is the only means of survival for me and my children. I have nowhere else to go, she said tearfully.

Another occupant claimed that Reverend Agnes had previously threatened to evacuate them only if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returned to power, raising concerns that the dispute may be politically motivated.

“She told us three years ago that she would deal with us if NDC wins. During the NPP administration, she couldn’t remove us,” he stated.

The group is now pleading with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the government to intervene immediately, citing what they describe as an unjust and premature use of force while the matter is still before the courts.
