GAF Removes Manhprugu Leader Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku Following Asantehene’s Mediation Report

Bawku – December 25, 2025 – Personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre, the self-styled leader of the Mamprugu faction in Bawku, from the town on Tuesday, December 24, 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the removal was carried out in accordance with recommendations contained in a mediation report submitted to President John Dramani Mahama by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a few days earlier.

The Ministry assured the public that Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe and currently in the custody of security officials.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in his report, insisted that the Supreme Court ruling recognising Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba must be fully respected and enforced.

The Asantehene emphasised that no leader, regardless of status, is above the 1992 Constitution and the laws of Ghana as upheld by the courts.

“We chiefs, no matter how exalted, do not live above the Constitution of Ghana and the laws duly enacted and affirmed by the courts,” he stated.

He urged the government to take firm action against any individual challenging the authority of Naba Azoka II, stressing that strict enforcement of the law is essential to restoring lasting peace and security in the region.

Otumfuo added that the final recommendation to the President was for the Nayiri (Overlord of Mamprugu) to accept the current legal position, recognising Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the Chief of Bawku and head chief of the Kusasi Traditional Area.

Acting on these recommendations, the government directed the removal of the Mamprugu leader, who had recently voiced dissatisfaction with the mediation report’s findings.

The Ministry concluded its statement by reiterating that the action was taken pursuant to Otumfuo’s mediation report on the Bawku chieftaincy affair, and affirmed that Alhaji Seidu Abagre remains safe under the care of security agencies.
