Analyst Questions Feasibility of Mahama’s 40,000 Security Recruitment Plan

A political commentator, Awal Mohammed, has raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to recruit 40,000 security personnel within four years, describing the plan as overly ambitious and politically motivated.

In a recent video, Awal Mohammed argued that the proposal may be more of a political strategy aimed at managing public expectations, particularly around job creation promises, rather than a practical policy that can be fully implemented.

He pointed to capacity constraints within existing training institutions, noting that current facilities may not be able to handle the large number of recruits within the proposed timeframe. According to him, this raises serious doubts about the ability of the government to meet the target.

Awal also drew comparisons with past recruitment efforts, stating that it previously took about eight years to recruit 50,000 personnel, making the new four-year target appear unrealistic.
He further suggested that the directive could be linked to broader political messaging, especially in relation to employment promises and the proposed 24-hour economy policy, which many Ghanaians expect to create jobs.

Despite acknowledging the importance of strengthening the country’s security services, Awal Mohammed emphasized the need for realistic planning and adequate infrastructure to ensure that such initiatives are achievable and sustainable.
