Ghana’s Public Debt Climbs to GH¢628.8 Billion in July 2025, Up GH¢15.8 Billion

Ghana’s public debt rose by GH¢15.8 billion in July 2025, reaching GH¢628.8 billion, according to the Bank of Ghana. This figure, equal to about 44.9% of the country’s GDP, translates to $59.9 billion, slightly higher than the $59.4 billion recorded in June 2025.

The debt had been dropping earlier, falling by GH¢156.4 billion from GH¢769.4 billion in March to GH¢613 billion in June, thanks to a stronger cedi against the dollar. However, July saw external debt rise to $29 billion (21.8% of GDP) from $29.1 billion, while domestic debt grew to GH¢323.7 billion (23.1% of GDP) from GH¢312.7 billion.

On the fiscal front, the government’s deficit was 1.4% of GDP in July, but the primary balance held a surplus of 0.7% of GDP, showing some financial stability despite the rising debt.
