

Seven Dead as Mining Pit Collapses at Manso Domi Keniago; One Feared Trapped
Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a mining pit at Manso Domi Keniago in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
One other miner is still feared to be trapped underground as rescue teams, with support from community volunteers, continue efforts to locate and retrieve the individual.
The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, September 3, 2026, when the miners were reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities in search of gold inside the pit.
Following the collapse, residents in the area quickly mobilised and joined the search and rescue operation. The Police and other relevant emergency agencies were also alerted about the incident.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night, leading to the recovery of the remains of seven miners who had been trapped under the debris.
The deceased have reportedly been identified by residents of the community, although further official confirmation of their identities is expected.
The Police are currently at the scene and are expected to transport the recovered bodies to the St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital mortuary for preservation and other necessary procedures.
Community volunteers remain at the mining site and are assisting the rescue teams as the search continues for the eighth miner believed to be trapped underground.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie South, Hon. Benjamin Marfo, together with other security personnel, is heading to the scene to assess the situation and provide support for the ongoing rescue and emergency response operations.
Authorities and the various rescue teams are expected to coordinate their activities at the site as they intensify efforts to locate the remaining miner.
Residents have also been advised to exercise extreme caution around the collapsed mining pit to prevent further loss of lives while rescue operations are underway.
The Assembly Member for the Domi Keniago Electoral Area, Hon. Charles Oduro, confirmed the incident and provided updates on the ongoing rescue efforts.
