Teacher Unions Threaten Industrial Action Over Unpaid 20% Deprived Area Allowance
Teacher unions have expressed frustration over delays in the payment of a 20 percent allowance for teachers working in deprived and hard-to-reach areas.
The unions said the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are expected to review the Deprived Area Report before engaging the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to negotiate the allowance.
The unions cited the arrangement in their concerns, stating that teachers in deprived and hard-to-reach communities have still not received the 20 percent allowance based on their basic salaries.
They accused the FWSC of failing to take the necessary action to implement the provision, despite previous commitments on the matter.
According to the unions, the delay has created widespread dissatisfaction, anger and frustration among teachers who continue to work under difficult conditions in deprived areas.
They said repeated delays and what they described as unfulfilled promises have left them with little choice but to consider industrial action to push for the implementation of their demand.
The unions are therefore calling on the relevant authorities to address the issue and ensure that teachers working in deprived and hard-to-reach areas receive the allowance due them.
