Hit-and-Run Tragedy: UniMAC Community Buries ‘Bright Light’ Nelson Blay Narkotey, Demands Justice and Safer Roads
The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) community gathered in sorrow on Saturday, February 7, 2026, to lay to rest Nelson Blay Narkotey, a promising Level 300 Top-Up Journalism student whose life was cut short in a devastating hit-and-run accident on the N1 Highway.
Nelson, fondly remembered as a kind, respectful, and academically strong young man whose infectious laughter and warm smile could brighten any room, was struck down on January 19, 2026, around 4:00 p.m. near the Dzorwulu traffic light intersection-close to the South Legon campus-while attempting to cross the busy road after visiting campus. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the unregistered vehicle briefly stopped as if to assist but then fled the scene, abandoning Nelson. His body was later discovered by a police patrol team.
In a moving student tribute delivered by representative Emmanuella Botchway, Nelson was described as a true gentleman and friend to all:
“Nelson was a person whose laughter shone and brightened wherever he found himself. Losing him has reminded the entire student body how precious he was. He was kind, respectful, and almost always ready to share laughter and support… If you needed help, you would not even need to ask-he would hurriedly support you.”
The funeral in Somanya, Eastern Region, was attended by UniMAC’s leadership, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, Registrar Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu, Director of Finance Mr. Francis Obeng, Dean of Students Dr. Ike Tandoh, Rector of the School of Journalism Prof. Christiana Hammond, along with students, security personnel, and other members of the community.
UniMAC’s official statement reflected the shared grief:
“With heavy hearts, the UniMAC community laid to rest a dear friend, brother, and student: Nelson Blay Narkotey. Though grief weighs heavily on us, we console ourselves in the hope that our brother is at peace. To the family, demirifa due. We stand with you in this moment of sorrow. Rest peacefully, brother. You will forever remain in our hearts.”
The incident has reignited calls for urgent road safety improvements over the dangerous N1 stretch frequently used by students. Students held candlelight vigils on campus, honoring Nelson’s memory while pressing for accountability and preventive measures to avoid future tragedies.
UniMAC management has assured full cooperation with the Ghana Police Service in the ongoing investigations to apprehend the fleeing driver and deliver justice. The community continues to rally under the call for #JusticeForNelsonBlayNarkotey.
Nelson Blay Narkotey’s untimely death has left a profound void, but his legacy of kindness, dedication, and positivity will endure in the hearts of many.
May his soul rest in perfect peace. 🕊️
