Environmental Cleanliness Is Everyone’s Responsibility – Fred Owusu Urges Ghanaians

Nana Serwaah Memorial School at Asenua in the Kwabre East Municipality has organised a community clean-up exercise as part of activities marking its 10th anniversary celebration, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sanitation and community development.

The exercise, which took place along the principal streets of Asenua, brought together the school’s management, teachers, pupils, and community members who joined efforts to clear choked gutters, sweep roads, and remove refuse from public spaces.

Speaking during the exercise, the Administrator of the school, Fred Owusu, said the initiative forms part of the school’s corporate social responsibility and its commitment to promoting a clean and healthy environment.

According to him, maintaining environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility that requires the collective effort of every member of society.

Mr. Owusu stressed that the popular saying “cleanliness is next to godliness” should not remain mere words but must be reflected in practical actions, adding that the school intends to make community clean-up exercises a regular part of its activities.

He further appealed to the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly to support the school’s sanitation drive by providing essential cleaning equipment such as dustbins, shovels, rakes, and other logistics to sustain future exercises.

Mr. Owusu also urged residents of Asenua to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and drains, warning that the practice contributes heavily to flooding and creates serious environmental and health hazards.

He encouraged other schools within the municipality to replicate similar initiatives aimed at promoting sanitation and environmental responsibility in their communities.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Asenua Electoral Area, Kaakyire Asumadu, who participated in the exercise, commended the school for demonstrating leadership and commitment toward community development.

He described the initiative as timely and called on educational institutions to complement government efforts by undertaking projects that positively impact society.

Hon. Asumadu appealed to the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly to construct speed ramps on the main road passing through Asenua, explaining that several pedestrians have been knocked down by speeding vehicles while attempting to cross the road.

He also raised concerns about the irregular evacuation of refuse from waste containers in the community, noting that overflowing waste bins pose serious health risks and require immediate intervention from the Assembly.

The Assembly Member further expressed concern over the increasing rate of drug abuse among the youth and urged young people to stay away from substance abuse, stressing that they are the future leaders of the country and must protect their health and future prospects.

He additionally called for improved security in the area, citing recurring robbery incidents, and appealed to security agencies to intensify patrols to ensure the safety of residents and their property.
