Buckingham Palace receives Royal Visitors

Emperor Naruhite and Emperess Masako with King Charles and Queen Camilla

The monarchs of Japan paid a special visit to the Buckingham Palace, on the 25th of June, 2024. Emperor Nahurite and his Empress, Empress Masako, were warmly welcomed ceremonially to the U.K. and the Palace by members of the royal family.

Prior to the ceremonial welcome, the Prince of Wales, Prince Williams officially welcomed the Emperor and Empress at their hotel, on the same said date. This takes place in London. Prince Williams, on King Charles’ behalf, shook hands with the couple.

The Prince, together with the rulers of Japan, then travelled in a carriage to meet up with the King, and Queen Camilla.

Among the series of activities that ensued, were a military pageant, a carriage ride, a lunch and the viewing of items from Japan-related Royal Collection. In addition, the couple paid a visit to Westmister Abbey to lay down a wreath on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

Presentations were made, a Royal Salute was given by the Guard of Honour and, the national anthem of Japan was played.

Princess Kate Middleton, 42, could not be in attendance due to the need for the continuation of her cancer treatment. Princess Anne, aged 73, also had her absence felt as she recently got injuries in an incident involving a horse at Gatcombe Park, her residence.

The Emperor and Empress had to postpone the original arrangement to pay the royal visit to the British monarchy because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They landed on Saturday, three days ahead of the state visit.

They had earlier on, undertook private engagements such as a visit to the Thames Barrier and to the Japan House upon arriving in the U.K.

The King and Queen, 75 and 76 respectively, attended the state banquet, with the Emperor and Empress also in attendance.
