VOLTA LAKE TRAGEDY: NINE FEARED DEAD, TWO MISSING AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES IN EAST GONJA

At least nine people are feared dead, with two others still missing, following a tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the busy route from Yeji to Congo.

The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly capsized due to harsh weather conditions at the time of the journey.

Reports indicate that seven people-comprising two women and five children-have been confirmed dead, while five male passengers were successfully rescued.

Rescue teams have so far retrieved seven bodies from the water, with search efforts still ongoing to locate one woman and one child who remain unaccounted for.

Authorities also revealed that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, a factor believed to have worsened the impact of the tragedy.

Emergency responders continue to comb the area as efforts intensify to find the missing victims.
