Heavy Flooding Paralyzes KNUST Campus, Strands Students as Downpour Wreaks Havoc

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) – A heavy downpour on Thursday morning caused severe flooding across parts of the KNUST campus, disrupting movement and academic activities and leaving numerous students trapped between their residences and lecture halls.

The floods, which overwhelmed drainage systems on several sections of the university, rendered key roads, bridges, and walkways impassable. Many students who tried to get to class were forced to take much longer alternative routes, while others chose to remain in their halls over safety concerns and limited access to lecture areas.

To help ease the situation, university buses that can manage some of the flooded stretches have been ferrying students across affected zones. However, taxis and smaller vehicles have been unable to navigate several submerged roads.

Security personnel have been deployed to monitor the situation and direct traffic away from the worst-hit areas in a bid to protect students and staff. The flooding significantly slowed campus movement and disrupted normal academic operations, especially during the morning hours.

As of Thursday afternoon, university authorities had not released any official statement on the scale of the disruption or immediate remedial actions.

In the meantime, students have renewed calls for urgent measures to tackle the persistent flooding on campus, voicing concerns over accessibility, safety, and the toll on academic work during the rainy season.
