GHANA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH TO SLOW IN 2026 AS INFLATION EASES – WORLD BANK REPORT

The World Bank has projected that Ghana’s economy will grow by 4.8 percent in 2026, a decline from the estimated 6.0 percent growth recorded in 2025.

According to the Bank’s latest Africa Economic Update, the anticipated slowdown reflects tightening domestic conditions and mounting external pressures, despite improvements in key macroeconomic indicators.

While growth is expected to moderate, inflation is projected to ease significantly. The World Bank forecasts Ghana’s end-of-year inflation rate for 2026 at around 9 percent, keeping the country within single-digit territory. This is expected to be driven by improved currency stability, sustained tight monetary policy, and easing external pressures.

For businesses, the outlook presents a mixed picture. Slower economic growth may lead to weaker domestic demand and cautious investment sentiment, potentially limiting expansion across major sectors. However, declining inflation could boost consumer purchasing power and help reduce operational costs for firms.

The report also warns that Ghana remains vulnerable to global economic shocks, including commodity price volatility, uncertain financial conditions, and geopolitical tensions—particularly in the Middle East—which continue to affect trade and energy markets.

Regionally, growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is projected at 4.1 percent in 2026, unchanged from 2025, though risks remain elevated. The World Bank noted that the region’s recovery from recent global shocks is gradually losing momentum, with projections slightly revised downward.

Despite the expected slowdown, Ghana’s medium-term outlook remains stable, with growth projected to hover around 5 percent in the coming years. The report suggests that the country is entering a phase of gradual recovery, prioritizing economic stability over rapid expansion.
