“Only Otumfuo’s Power Can End Galamsey” – Domi Keniago Chief Declares

The Otumfuo Bremponghene of Domi Keniago in the Amansie South District, Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II, has boldly declared that the government’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, will continue to fail unless the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and his traditional chiefs are fully empowered to lead the charge.

Speaking in an interview, Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II expressed concern that the government’s current approach to the galamsey menace largely benefits a few individuals and political allies, rather than tackling the root of the problem.

He criticized the deployment of soldiers to various mining sites, stating that the move has not eradicated galamsey but rather fueled confusion and allowed some personnel to enrich themselves.

“If the government truly wants to end galamsey, it should hand over the mandate to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Through his Abrempong, he can command real change because they know the land and how to restore it,” he asserted.

The traditional leader emphasized that only the Asantehene and the spirit of the Golden Stool possess the authority and knowledge required to bring lasting solutions to the crisis.

Nana Obeng Mensah Ababio II also explained that while some chiefs are well-informed about mining site boundaries, others are not—making it risky for outsiders to intervene without consulting the local custodians of the land.

“Bringing outsiders who know nothing about our lands only opens doors to document forgery and deceit. The government should first consult Otumfuo, who will direct his chiefs in the mining areas to take responsible action,” he added.

He called on the government to collaborate with Nananom to ensure that the fight against galamsey is effective, transparent, and grounded in traditional authority.
