The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued strict guidelines to ensure a fair and ethical testing environment as students write the 2024 BECE. Specifically, they have prohibited the use of mobile phones and other communication devices by candidates, invigilators, and supervisors at examination centres. This decision was announced during a press conference held in Accra by the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC National Office, John K. Kapi.

‘’Neither supervisors, invigilators nor candidates are permitted to bring mobile phones into examination halls.‘’

The briefing aimed to update stakeholders and the public on the preparations for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which as scheduled, commenced on Monday, July 8, 2024. A total of 569,095 school candidates and 1,366 private candidates are anticipated to participate in the BECE this year.

During the press conference, Mr. Kapi emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines and urged parents to ensure their children do not bring mobile phones to examination centres. He emphasized that any candidate found in possession of a phone would have their entire results canceled.

Invigilators and supervisors have been reminded of their responsibilities in maintaining a secure testing environment and ensuring the guidelines are followed.

Mr. Kapi also advised that only those directly involved in the examination process should be present at the centers, explicitly prohibiting school proprietors, parents, and headmasters from entering the premises. WAEC has confirmed that appropriate security measures have been established for all examination centers.

Candidates were also warned against removing portions of the question paper or answer booklets, refusing to submit their work, or engaging in any other misconduct during the examination process.

Candidates were reminded to write their full names and index numbers on their answer booklets and question sheets. If this instruction is not followed, the Council will not be able to assign scores to the candidate.

The 2024 BECE has started, and will last a week.
