Pru East MP Marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Member of Parliament for Pru East, Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has emphasized the importance of safety measures as Ghana joins the world to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Speaking to the media, Hon. Boam disclosed that the government plans to provide life jackets for residents of Yeji and surrounding communities that depend on river transport. However, since the distribution of the life jackets has not yet begun, he appealed to residents to purchase their own, despite the cost, stressing that “life is more precious and valuable than money.”

He advised, “Whenever you are crossing the river, make sure you have a life jacket on. It can save your life.”

The MP further noted that proactive safety measures can significantly reduce disaster-related deaths. He cited a conversation with the Navy Commander, who explained that rescue operations during boat accidents are often difficult, even for experienced swimmers. According to him, “Having a life jacket greatly increases the chances of survival while awaiting rescue.”

Hon. Boam therefore urged all residents to take personal responsibility for their safety while awaiting the government’s full supply of life jackets.
