Okomfo Nana Baffour Gyau Calls for Equal Acceptance of Traditional Religion in Ghana

Okomfo Nana Baffour Gyau has urged Ghanaians to embrace traditional religion with the same respect and acceptance afforded to Christianity and Islam. Speaking to the press at his premises, he highlighted that Ghana is home to three primary religions—Christianity, Islam, and traditional religion—and none should be sidelined.

He emphasized that each religion has a significant role in the country, with traditionalists contributing just as much as Christians and Muslims. “All these three religions are intertwined with mysteries, especially regarding sins and tragedies. Yet, all are held accountable without discrimination. It’s time for the negative stereotypes and unjust accusations against traditionalists to end,” Okomfo Nana Baffour Gyau stated.

In addition to advocating for religious equality, he proposed that the government should legislate a national “Rivers Day.” This day would be dedicated to environmental cleanliness, where every community would engage in cleaning water bodies and clearing choked gutters. He believes this initiative would significantly reduce the prevalence of diseases such as malaria and typhoid fever.

“Christians and Muslims have their responsibilities, and so do we, the traditionalists,” he reiterated.

Okomfo Nana Baffour Gyau’s appeal comes at a time when there is increasing recognition of the importance of environmental health and the role of traditional practices in promoting societal well-being. His call for a unified approach to religious acceptance and environmental conservation reflects a vision of inclusivity and communal responsibility

in Ghana.
