MP’s Diary : MP for Salaga-South Supports International Day of the Girl Child Celebration in her Constituency

The Member of Parliament for Salaga-South, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has extended her continued support towards the empowerment of young girls in the constituency with a GHC 10,000 donation to the Municipal Education Directorate. The contribution is to assist with activities marking this year’s International Day of the Girl Child celebration.

The cheque was presented on behalf of the MP by the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Haruna Abdul Aziz, popularly known as Chairman Abotsi, at a brief ceremony held at the Municipal Education Office.
Speaking during the presentation, Chairman Abotsi noted that Hon. Zuwera, being a strong advocate for women and girls, has always demonstrated commitment to the annual celebration. He added that the MP would have loved to personally join the event to inspire and interact with the participants, especially the young girls, but was unavoidably engaged with a national assignment.
He extended the MP’s best wishes to the Municipal Girls Empowerment Office and all participants, reaffirming her commitment to the promotion of education and girl-child empowerment in the municipality.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Richard Kamboey, the Human Resource Officer of the Directorate, expressed profound appreciation to Hon. Zuwera for her consistent support. He noted that the MP’s contributions have over the years helped strengthen the Directorate’s initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes within the Municipality.

The Municipal Girl Child Officer, Madam Wecheng Amanda, disclosed that this year’s celebration will be held on October 11, 2025, with an expected participation of about 985 girls from various schools across the Municipality. The global theme for this year’s event is “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead -Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”

Madam Amanda outlined several activities planned to commemorate the day, including a community float to raise awareness, radio discussions on girls’ rights and global challenges, and a STEM education workshop to inspire innovation and learning among girls. She added that outstanding participants will receive awards and motivational items such as exercise books, mathematical sets, and sanitary pads.

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, was established by the United Nations in 2011 to recognize the rights of girls and the challenges they face globally. The day highlights the need to promote girls’ empowerment and gender equality, particularly in areas such as education, health, leadership, and protection from gender-based violence and child marriage.

Accompanying the Constituency Chairman were constituency executives and team members, including Mr. Sumaila Ibn Hafiz (Constituency Zongo Caucus Coordinator), Mr. Adam Braimah Gazila (Deputy Constituency Treasurer), Mr. Baba Yakubu (Constituency Elections Director), Mr. Mustapha Tawfic (Former Communication Officer), Mr. Ahmed Fuseini (Deputy NADMO Director, Disaster Control), Mr. Jawula Basit (Team Member), Madam Boya (Constituency Executive Member), Hajia Kade ( Government Appointtee and Team Member), Madam Zarawu (Team Member) and Mr. Saaka Sulemana (Research Assistant to the MP).

In a related development, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah last week donated GHC 8,000 to support the purchase of tyres for the duty vehicle of the Municipal Education Director. The intervention, according to the MP, forms part of efforts to enhance the Directorate’s operational efficiency, particularly in supervision and monitoring of schools across the Municipality.

Through these consistent gestures, Hon. Hajia Zuwera continues to reaffirm her commitment to promoting quality education and empowering the girl child in the Salaga-South Constituency.
