Ghana’s Francis-Xavier Sosu Appointed Vice President of West African Parliamentary Caucus

Madina MP and prominent human rights lawyer, Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu, has been unanimously elected as Vice President of the West African Caucus of the African Parliamentary Union (APU). The appointment was confirmed during the 83rd APU Executive Committee session held in Rabat from May 21–22, 2025.

Nominated by Ghana’s Second Deputy Speaker, Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako (MP for Fomena), Sosu’s selection reflects his growing influence in regional parliamentary affairs. He was part of a high-level Ghanaian delegation led by Hon. Amoako and endorsed by Speaker Alban Bagbin. Other delegation members included MPs Bede Ziedeng (Lawra-Nandom), Sammy Awuku (Akuapem North), John Oti Bless (Nkwanta North), and Shirley Kyei (Atwima Nwabiagya South).

The West African Caucus, now under Malian President Hon. Alioune Gureyre and Togolese Secretary Hon. Lawson Raymonde, resolved to tackle pressing regional challenges particularly terrorism and democratic backsliding ahead of the APU’s full conference later this year.

Sosu’s elevation positions Ghana at the heart of continental efforts to strengthen governance and security frameworks across West Africa.
