Ghana Palliative Care Association Advocates for Comprehensive Support for Patients with Life-Limiting Illnesses
The Ghana Palliative Care Association has underscored the importance of palliative care in improving the quality of life for patients living with chronic and life-limiting illnesses.
Speaking to the media, Miss Winifred Nana Yaa Otoo, Executive Secretary of the Association, revealed that the World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced a policy on palliative care to bridge the gap in care for individuals whose state of living is affected by chronic diseases such as hypertension.
Miss Otoo explained that chronic illnesses not only affect patients physically but also impact their social lives, relationships, and roles within their families and communities. “When a person is diagnosed with a chronic illness, their quality of life can significantly deteriorate. Palliative care steps in to address these challenges by providing comprehensive support that improves the patient’s overall well-being,” she said.
Dr. Bisi Adewale Assa, Research Lead for the Ghana Palliative Care Association, added that palliative care is not limited to end-of-life care but begins immediately after diagnosis. “Palliative care is about providing relief and support to patients and their families, regardless of the prognosis. It’s about improving the quality of life for patients, and we work with a multidisciplinary team to achieve this,” Dr. Assa explained.
The Association is working to dispel misconceptions about palliative care and promote awareness of its benefits. “We provide total care, including pain management, psychological support, and social care, to both patients and their families. Our goal is to ensure that patients live with dignity and comfort, even in the face of illness,” Miss Otoo emphasized.
The Ghana Palliative Care Association’s efforts are geared towards providing holistic care and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses, ensuring they receive the care they need to live fulfilling lives.
