Ghana Launches National Coalition Against Hate Speech and Disinformation

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has launched a National Multi-Stakeholder Coalition to combat hate speech and disinformation in Ghana.

The coalition aims to bring together various stakeholders to promote fact-based reporting and counter harmful narratives that threaten the country’s peace and stability.

The program was held this morning at Mensvic Grand Hotel, East Legon 17th July, 2024.

And it was honoured by some dignitaries like Chairman for National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Adu-Gyamfi, Representative of Traditional Authority, National Immigration Service, Ghana Army, Representatives from political parties and many more.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of MFWA, expressed concern that Ghana is becoming a hotbed of misinformation and disinformation, with potentially devastating consequences.

He noted that despite having a smaller population than Nigeria, Ghana has a higher number of TV and FM stations, which can perpetuate harmful content.

Braimah emphasized the need for Ghanaians to unite against hate speech and disinformation, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

To this end, the coalition will train 100 journalists and partner with radio and TV stations to promote fact-based reporting and counter harmful narratives.

The coalition also plans to create short videos to raise awareness about the dangers of hate speech and disinformation.

Braimah stressed that Ghana’s peace and stability are paramount, and it is essential to work together to prevent the spread of harmful content.

The launch of the National Multi-Stakeholder Coalition marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to combat hate speech and disinformation. The coalition’s work will be crucial in promoting a culture of fact-based reporting and ensuring peaceful elections in 2024.
