Fire Outbreak at Saboba EP Senior High School Claims Life of First-Year Student

A tragic fire outbreak at the girls’ dormitory of Saboba EP Senior High School in the Northern Region has claimed the life of a first-year student, Binidan Theresah.

The deceased, who was reportedly unwell, was unable to escape after being trapped in the dormitory, which eyewitnesses allege had been locked to prevent others from noticing her presence inside. Her charred remains were recovered after the fire was extinguished and have been deposited at the Saboba Hospital.

According to one student who spoke anonymously, Theresah’s presence in the dormitory went unnoticed during the chaos caused by the fire. Her body was only discovered after the flames were doused.

The blaze also destroyed students’ belongings, including books and uniforms, leaving many devastated.

ADO 1 Yussif Issahaku, the District Fire Officer for Saboba, revealed during a media briefing that technical challenges hindered the response to the fire.

“Our personnel arrived promptly after receiving the call, but the fire tender’s pump, which had been tested earlier, failed to function during the emergency. We had to rely on buckets of water with assistance from students and staff to fight the fire,” he explained.

He expressed deep regret over the loss of life and urged residents to remain cautious during the dry season, as increased temperatures elevate the risk of fires.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
