Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly Supports Persons with Disabilities on White Cane Safety Day

The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has extended support to persons living with disabilities as part of activities marking the International Day for White Cane Safety.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Abubakar Sedik, led the distribution exercise, which included white canes for visually impaired persons, deep freezers for 10 beneficiaries, medical support for one person, start-up capital for six, a spraying machine for one, a tricycle (Aboboya) for another, and educational support for five students.

The gesture, according to the DCE, forms part of the Assembly’s commitment to empower persons with disabilities to become self-reliant and productive members of society. The DCE emphasised that the NDC government remains dedicated to the welfare of all, including people with disabilities, and urged the beneficiaries to use the items profitably.

“I want you to know that my doors are always open to you. Take good care of these items and make good use of them for your personal and community development,” Hon. Sedik said.

Mr George Kyeremanteng, former Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Blind Union, educated participants on the significance of the white cane, describing it as an essential tool for independence and safety for the visually impaired. He encouraged them not to look down on themselves, stressing that disability does not mean inability.

Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr Mengisto Opoku Akowuah, disclosed that his office will conduct a monitoring exercise in December to ensure that the items are being used for their intended purposes.

The event brought smiles to many beneficiaries, reaffirming the Assembly’s continuous support for inclusivity and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
