Staffing Shortages Challenge Healthcare in Amansie West: Government Pledges Action
Amansie West, Ghana – Retaining medical professionals in the district has emerged as a significant challenge, with many health workers seeking transfers after years of service, leaving critical gaps in healthcare delivery.
Speaking on the issue, the district health director emphasized that despite government efforts to improve staff distribution, retention remains a pressing concern. The shortage of midwives, pharmacy technicians, and laboratory staff is particularly affecting service delivery.
“We are working under a holistic assessment framework set by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to enhance staffing, infrastructure, and service quality. However, without adequate personnel, achieving these goals remains difficult,” he noted.
Government Plans to Improve Accommodation
Addressing the concerns, Mr. Ebenezer Awuku, Regional Estate Manager of the GHS, acknowledged the staffing crisis and announced plans to enhance accommodation for health workers.
“We recognize the challenges healthcare workers face in Amansie West, particularly with housing. We are working on improving accommodation facilities to make their stay more comfortable,” he assured.
Honoring Dedicated Health Workers
As part of an event highlighting healthcare efforts in the district, outstanding health workers were recognized for their dedication. Madam Evelyn Tweneboah, a midwifery officer at Manso Jeninso CHPS Compound, was honored for her 22 years of service to the community.
Expressing her gratitude, she said, “I love serving this community, and this award is a great honor for me.”
Despite ongoing staffing challenges, the Amansie West Health Directorate remains committed to delivering quality healthcare services. However, officials stress that urgent government intervention is needed to ensure adequate staffing and sustainable healthcare delivery in the district.
