NHIA CEO, Dr. Dacosta Aboagyd
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has announced the release of GH¢200 million for claims payments to facilitate free dialysis treatment for kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This groundbreaking initiative fulfills the government’s promise, led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to make kidney dialysis treatment accessible to all NHIS subscribers.
As of December 1, 2024, kidney patients nationwide can access free dialysis treatment at 20 accredited health facilities without any out-of-pocket expenses. NHIS staff have been deployed to these facilities to assist patients, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
“The free dialysis treatment officially starts today, December 1, 2024, in 20 NHIS-accredited facilities across the country. NHIS staff are stationed in these centers to provide support to kidney dialysis patients,” Dr. Aboagye shared in a social media announcement.
To prevent financial strain on patients, he assured that refunds would be issued promptly in cases where hospitals inadvertently charge for the service.
“If a hospital mistakenly charges a patient, a full refund will be provided. Additionally, GH¢200 million has been disbursed to facilities nationwide for claims payments to sustain the program,” he stated.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare system, demonstrating the government’s commitment to reducing the burden of chronic illnesses. With kidney disease increasingly becoming a public health concern, this program is expected to save lives and improve the quality of care for patients.
Patients and their families are encouraged to visit the accredited facilities to benefit from this life-changing policy.
