More than 3,000 residents have been displaced in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, affecting more than 400 houses.

More than 3,000 residents have been displaced in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, affecting more than 400 houses.
Several communities located along the river have been hit by the flooding, with Zongo reported to be among the worst affected areas.
More than half of the Zongo community is said to be submerged, forcing residents to abandon their homes as floodwaters continue to spread into houses and surrounding areas.
The displaced residents are currently being accommodated at temporary locations, including classrooms, while authorities work to secure more suitable places for them.
The extent of the flooding has placed significant pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, creating an urgent need for assistance from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Hohoe Member of Parliament Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo said the situation had become too difficult for the local authorities to manage on their own.
“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.
Mr Tsekpo commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the security agencies for their response to the disaster.
He particularly praised them for helping to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas and taking steps to prevent a possible loss of lives.
However, the Hohoe MP said the emergency situation was not yet over, explaining that water levels were continuing to rise despite the heavy rains having stopped.
Authorities are therefore maintaining efforts to protect residents in the affected communities while appealing for additional support to provide shelter and other essential assistance to those displaced by the floods.
