CHILDHOOD CANCER ON THE RISE IN GHANA: EXPERTS SOUND ALARM

175 Children Diagnosed Annually, Early Detection Key to Survival

Ghana is facing a growing crisis in childhood cancer, with alarming rates of diagnosis and mortality, experts warn.

According to Dr. Vivian Painstail, Head of the Child Health Department at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), approximately 175 children are diagnosed with cancer annually, with numbers expected to rise if urgent action is not taken.

Speaking at a childhood cancer awareness walk in Kumasi, Dr. Painstail lamented the reluctance of parents to acknowledge that children can get cancer, delaying diagnosis and complicating treatment.

“Many parents refuse to believe that kids can get cancer, which hinders our work,” Dr. Painstail said. “Early detection is crucial, and we urge parents to seek medical attention promptly.”

Research shows that 80% of childhood cancer cases can be cured if detected early. However, hospitals face challenges such as financial constraints and the need for specialized food for children undergoing treatment.

Dr. Emmanuel Oppong, Representative of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, emphasized the importance of early detection. “We can reduce the increasing rate of childhood cancer cases if parents seek medical attention promptly instead of visiting herbal centers.”

Common Signs and Symptoms of Childhood Cancer:

– Unusual lumps or swelling
– Unexpected paleness and loss of energy
– Easy bruising and bleeding
– Ongoing pain in one area of the body
– Unexplained fever or illness
– Frequent headaches with vomiting

The experts are calling on corporate bodies, benevolent organizations, and individuals to support the fight against childhood cancer.

“We need help to provide specialized care and support to these children,” Dr. Painstail appealed. “Every helping hand counts.” She said.
