Oppong Nkrumah Alleges Arrest of Over 16 NPP Members Under NDC Government

The Member of Parliament for Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and former Minister for Information has alleged that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has arrested more than 16 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) since assuming office.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah claimed the individuals were arrested and allegedly subjected to unfair treatment over comments made on social media that were considered unfavourable to the government.

According to him, “Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested for simply making comments on social media or posting things on social media that the government finds unpalatable.”

He made the remarks while reacting to the arrest and detention of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah alleged that Abronye DC was initially arrested and denied bail, adding that he had remained in detention since last Wednesday.

He further claimed that family members, political associates, and lawyers of Abronye DC had allegedly been denied access to him following his arrest.

The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP accused the government of using arrests, detention, and remand as tools to silence critics and suppress opposing voices.

“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing on delivering on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

He indicated that the NPP would continue to challenge the situation through public advocacy and legal processes.

“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he added.
